Look Up And Live: What Snakes Can Teach Us About Life

Look Up And Live: What Snakes Can Teach Us About Life

In the wilderness, the Israelites faced a moment of profound despair. Fiery serpents, sent as a consequence of their disobedience, bit the people, and many died. Yet, in their darkest hour, God provided a way forward—a bronze serpent lifted high on a pole, a symbol of healing and hope. Today, as many in our community face trials and uncertainty, we can draw profound lessons from this ancient story. Let us turn to the wisdom of Scripture to find comfort and strength.

1. Acknowledge the Struggle, but Trust in God’s Mercy

The Israelites cried out to Moses, confessing their sins and pleading for deliverance (Numbers 21:7). Their acknowledgment of wrongdoing was the first step toward healing. In times of trouble, it is natural to feel overwhelmed, but we must remember that God’s mercy is ever-present. As Psalm 34:18 reminds us, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Even in our lowest moments, we are not abandoned.

2. Look Up and Live

God instructed Moses to lift up a bronze serpent on a pole, promising that anyone who looked at it would live (Numbers 21:8-9). This act of faith—looking up in the midst of pain—symbolizes the power of trusting in God’s provision. In the Gospels, Jesus references this very story, saying, "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life" (John 3:14-15). Whether we face physical, emotional, or spiritual "bites," we are called to lift our eyes to God, the ultimate source of healing and hope.

3. Trials Refine Us

The fiery serpents were not merely a punishment; they were a tool for transformation. The Israelites’ suffering led them to repentance and a deeper reliance on God. Similarly, the challenges we face today can refine us, shaping us into stronger, more faithful individuals. As Isaiah 48:10 declares, "See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction." Even in the heat of trial, God is at work, purifying and preparing us for greater purposes.

4. God’s Promises Are Unchanging

In moments of uncertainty, it is easy to lose sight of God’s promises. Yet, the story of the bronze serpent reminds us that God’s faithfulness endures. He provided a way for the Israelites to live, just as He provides for us today. As Jesus assures us in Matthew 6:26, "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" No matter how dire the circumstances, God’s promises remain steadfast.

5. Community and Intercession Matter

When the Israelites were bitten, they turned to Moses, asking him to pray for them (Numbers 21:7). This act of communal intercession underscores the importance of standing together in times of trouble. As Proverbs 17:17 says, "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." Let us lean on one another, offering prayers, support, and encouragement as we navigate these challenging times.

Conclusion: A Call to Faith and Resilience

The story of the fiery serpents teaches us that even in the midst of suffering, God provides a path to healing and hope. Like the Israelites, we are called to acknowledge our struggles, lift our eyes to God, and trust in His unchanging promises. Let us remember the words of Psalm 46:1-2: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea."

In this season of trial, may we find solace in the wisdom of Scripture and the enduring faithfulness of God. Just as the bronze serpent brought life to those who looked upon it, may we too find renewal and strength as we fix our gaze on the One who holds our future.
