The Strength Of Community In Hardships: Hope For Difficult Times: Finding Strength Amidst Struggles
"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:
If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." – Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
"For where two or three gather in My name, there am I with them." – Matthew 18:20
Life’s burdens can feel overwhelming when carried alone. When sorrow, fear, or trials press upon us, it’s easy to retreat into solitude, thinking no one can understand or help. But God, in His wisdom and love, designed us for community. From the very beginning, He declared that it was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18), and throughout Scripture, we see that He calls His people into fellowship—with Him and with one another.
Community is not just a comfort; it is a source of strength. When we are connected to the body of believers, we are upheld in prayer, encouraged in faith, and reminded of God’s promises in moments of doubt. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are bound together as one family in Yeshua, carrying one another’s burdens and rejoicing in each other’s victories.
The Biblical Call to Community
The Torah and the prophets continually reveal God’s desire for His people to walk together in love, obedience, and support. The nation of Israel was called not as isolated individuals, but as a people, a collective body bound together in covenant with God. When they followed His commands in unity, they thrived; when they turned to selfishness and division, they struggled.
The Torah emphasizes caring for one another:
"If one of your fellow Israelites becomes poor and is unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you." – Leviticus 25:35
This command reflects God’s heart—that His people would uphold one another in times of need, never leaving the vulnerable to suffer alone.
The prophet Isaiah echoes this:
"Share your food with the hungry and provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, clothe them, and do not turn away from your own flesh and blood." – Isaiah 58:7
The strength of a community is found in its willingness to love, support, and uphold one another. This same principle carries into the New Testament, where Yeshua calls His followers to walk in unity, reflecting His love to the world.
Jesus’ Teaching on Community and Fellowship
During His ministry, Jesus demonstrated the power of togetherness. He did not walk alone but surrounded Himself with disciples. He taught them, encouraged them, and prayed with them. Even in His most difficult moments, He longed for their presence—like in the Garden of Gethsemane when He asked them to stay and pray with Him (Matthew 26:38).
He also made it clear that His presence dwells among His people when they gather in unity:
"For where two or three gather in My name, there am I with them." – Matthew 18:20
This is a profound promise—when believers come together, whether in joy or in hardship, Jesus Himself is present among them. His peace, strength, and guidance flow through community.
Bearing One Another’s Burdens
The early believers in the book of Acts lived this out powerfully.
"All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people." – Acts 2:44-47
They did not let their brothers and sisters struggle alone. They bore one another’s burdens, reflecting the very heart of God. Today, we are called to do the same.
Paul, in his letters, urges the body of Messiah to walk in this spirit of unity and love:
"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." – Galatians 6:2
Community is not just about receiving help, but also about giving it. Sometimes we will be the ones needing support, and other times we will be the ones lifting up others.
The Blood of Jesus: Our Unity in Him
Through the blood of Jesus, we are made one family—Jew and Gentile, rich and poor, strong and weak. His sacrifice broke down every dividing wall, uniting us as one body in Him.
"For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility." – Ephesians 2:14
No matter our background, struggles, or past, we are united in Yeshua’s blood, redeemed into one family of faith. And like a family, we are meant to walk together, lifting each other up in love and faithfulness.
The Holy Spirit: The Bond of Unity
Jesus not only gave us community, but He also sent the Holy Spirit to empower it. The Spirit is the glue that binds believers together, strengthening the body of Messiah in times of trial.
"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth." – John 14:16-17
The Spirit gives wisdom, comfort, and strength—not just individually, but through the community of believers. When we pray together, encourage one another, and worship as one body, the Holy Spirit moves among us, bringing healing and hope.
Practical Ways to Find Strength in Community
-
Seek out Fellowship – If you are struggling, don’t suffer alone. Reach out to a local congregation, Bible study group, or trusted friends in the faith.
-
Pray with Others – When two or more gather in prayer, Jesus is present. Lift up your struggles with a fellow believer and experience the peace of shared faith.
-
Be Vulnerable – It can be hard to share burdens, but healing comes when we open our hearts. Share your struggles with trusted believers who can offer prayer and support.
-
Serve One Another – Sometimes, the best way to find encouragement is by giving it. Helping others strengthens both them and us.
-
Lean on Scripture Together – Study the Word with others and remind each other of God’s promises. His truth brings strength.
Conclusion: A Cord of Three Strands
The book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that a cord of three strands is not easily broken. Alone, we are vulnerable, but together, strengthened by faith and the power of the Holy Spirit, we are unshakable.
Dear friend, if you are walking through hardship, do not walk alone. Let the body of Messiah surround you with love. Let the presence of Jesus fill your heart through the fellowship of believers. You are not alone—you are part of a family, a people redeemed by His blood, bound together by His Spirit.
Prayer for Strength in Community
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of fellowship. Thank You for never leaving me to walk alone. When I feel weak, surround me with Your people who will strengthen me in faith. Help me to be a source of encouragement to others, to lift up those who are struggling, and to walk in the love of Jesus. Fill my heart with the presence of Your Holy Spirit, that I may experience the strength of community and the peace of Your promises. In the name of Yeshua, my Messiah, Amen.
